Safeguard your data with Android’s new features for combating theft

Smartphones have become an essential part of our lives, storing personal and sensitive information. Losing your smartphone or having it stolen can be a nightmare, especially without proper security measures. Fortunately, Google is introducing new Android device theft protection features to safeguard your device and data before, during, and after theft.

Before the theft: Proactive protection

Google is adding these security features to deter theft and protect your data:

  • Factory reset upgrade – Criminals often reset stolen devices for resale, but this upgrade prevents them from doing so. Without your Google account credentials, they cannot set up the device again.

  • Private space – Create a secure, hidden space on your phone to store sensitive apps like banking and health apps. This adds extra protection, even if your device is compromised.

  • Strengthened security settings – New safeguards prevent unauthorized changes to sensitive settings. Disabling Find My Device or extending screen timeout now requires PIN, password, or biometric authentication.

  • Enhanced authentication – This feature adds extra security by requiring biometrics to access critical Google account and device settings from untrusted locations.

Factory reset protection and private space will launch with Android 15. Enhanced authentication will roll out to select devices in December 2024.

During the theft: Automatic defense

These features automatically detect suspicious activity and protect your device’s data:

  • AI-powered screen lock – Theft Detection Lock uses Google AI to detect suspicious movement, like someone snatching your phone, and quickly locks the screen to prevent unauthorized access.

  • Offline Device Lock – If someone disconnects your phone from the internet, this feature locks your screen to protect your information. Android also detects multiple failed attempts and locks your device to prevent further access.

Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock will roll out to Android 10+ devices later this year via a Google Play services update.

After the theft: Rapid response

Find My Device allows you to remotely lock or wipe a lost or stolen phone. It now lets you mark the device as lost for easier tracking. However, when a phone goes missing, users often forget their Google account password, making it harder to access Find My Device.

  • Remote Lock – With your phone number and a quick security challenge, you can lock your device remotely from any other device. This gives you time to secure your account and wipe your device.

Find My Device works with Android devices running version 5 or higher. Later this year, a Google Play services update will bring Remote Lock to devices running Android 10+.

Google’s new features show its commitment to user security. By staying vigilant and using these protections, you can safeguard your data and reduce the stress of a potential theft.
